The cost of confusing these three categories is not theoretical. A non-compliant explosion-proof luminaire installed in an EU underground coal mine is grounds for the mine inspector to halt operations. Key distinction: IECEx and ATEX are technically aligned in many areas but legally distinct. An IECEx CoC is not automatically valid for ATEX purposes. A product may hold IECEx and still require a separate ATEX EU-type examination certificate to be sold into the EU.
How do I check if a Chinese factory’s IECEx certificate is real?
This is the most important verification because IECEx has a clean, free, public registry.
Step 1 — Ask for the actual CoC PDF, not a logo or claim. The PDF will show: certificate number (format IECEx XXX YY.NNNNX), the applicant, the manufacturer, the equipment description, the Ex marking (e.g. Ex db IIB T4 Gb), the standards applied, and validity conditions.
Step 2 — Look the certificate up on the IECEx Online Certificate System (OD list). Search by certificate number. The record must exactly match the PDF the factory sent. If it does not appear, the certificate is either fraudulent, withdrawn, or the number was mis-typed.
Step 3 — Confirm the manufacturer on the CoC matches the factory you are buying from. Many Chinese factories use certificates issued to an affiliated entity — a related trading company, a former JV partner, or a parent group. The certificate may be genuine; whether it covers your purchase order depends on whether the manufacturer named on the CoC is the entity actually building your goods.
Step 4 — Confirm the scope covers your specific SKU. A certificate covering “Series A, 30W and 60W, Ex db IIB T4 Gb” does not cover the 100W model the factory is now quoting. Read the scope literally.
Step 5 — Check the validity date and any conditions of use (the “X” suffix on the marking denotes specific conditions). Confirm that your application environment respects those conditions.
How do I verify an ATEX EU-type examination certificate from a Chinese supplier?
ATEX verification is harder than IECEx because there is no single equivalent of the IECEx OD list. Different Notified Bodies publish their own registries.
Step 1 — Ask for the EU-type examination certificate PDF. The certificate number takes a form like DEKRA 14ATEX0123 X or SGS24ATEX0089X. The Notified Body name and four-digit Notified Body number will appear.
Step 2 — Cross-check on the issuing Notified Body’s registry. Most major Notified Bodies (DEKRA, SGS, INERIS, TÜV) maintain searchable registries on their own websites. For less accessible Notified Bodies, a direct email asking “is certificate X currently valid for manufacturer Y?” is appropriate and routinely answered.
Step 3 — Verify the manufacturer entity matches the factory shipping your goods — same logic as IECEx.
Step 4 — Confirm the ATEX category and EPL match your application. ATEX categories (1, 2, 3) map to risk zones (0, 1, 2 for gases; 20, 21, 22 for dusts). A Zone 1 gas atmosphere requires at minimum Category 2 / EPL Gb. A Category 3 product is not acceptable for Zone 1.
Step 5 — Confirm the CE marking and EU Declaration of Conformity exist. ATEX requires CE marking and an EU DoC referencing the EU-type examination certificate. If the factory cannot produce a current DoC, the product is not legally on the EU market regardless of how genuine the underlying certificate is.
How do I verify an MSHA approval on a Chinese mining equipment supplier?
MSHA approvals are listed in the publicly searchable MSHA Approved Products List at msha.gov. Approval numbers follow the regulation part (e.g. 23A-NNNNN-0 for Part 23, 18A-NNNNN-0 for Part 18).
The verification process is the cleanest of the three:
- Ask for the approval number and the product description.
- Search the MSHA Approved Products List by approval number, manufacturer, or product name.
- Confirm the manufacturer name, the product description, and the part number all match the factory’s claim.
- Confirm the approval status is “Active” — MSHA approvals can be modified, suspended, or revoked.
- Read any conditions on the approval letter.
Important: MSHA approval is product-specific, not factory-level. There is no category of “MSHA-recognised factory” as a blanket credential — the MSHA scheme approves individual products, not manufacturing entities. A factory holding one product approval on the list cannot extend that to other products outside the specified scope.
What are the red flags during a certification verification dialogue?
These are patterns that consistently signal a problem:
“We will send the certificate after the deposit is paid.” A current, in-scope certificate is a sales tool. Reluctance to share it before commercial commitment is itself a signal.
“It is being renewed.” Ask for the previous (expired) version plus the renewal application receipt. A genuine renewal cycle produces paperwork.
The certificate is issued to a different legal entity with a similar name. Ask for the licensing agreement, manufacturing site address on the CoC, or written confirmation from the certificate holder.
The factory sends a “test report” instead of a certificate. Test reports are inputs to certification, not certifications. They prove a sample was tested; they do not prove the production line is currently authorised to ship certified product.
The Ex marking on the certificate does not match the Ex marking on the product nameplate. This is one of the most common findings in shipment inspections. The marking on the physical product must match the certificate exactly.
Claims that “GB 3836 is the same as IEC 60079, so our Ex certificate covers ATEX.” The standards are technically aligned in many areas, but the certification systems are legally separate. Domestic Chinese Ex certification does not substitute for ATEX or IECEx.
